A while ago I wrote a review for the latest release of German metalband Mörser (check it out here: http://www.metalrage.com/reviews/1153). I decided to ask them some questions afterwards. Here’s the result.

Hey, how are you?

Hi, we are quite fine. Werder Bremen is playing the most attractive soccer. And our team, Cosmos FC, is on the way to the double in the alternative soccer league in Bremen.

Please introduce yourself and your band?

I’m Denny, one of the vocalists of Mörser. There are Graby the second vocalist, Sven and Matze the bass players, Dennis and Sven the guitar players, and Andre the drummer in Mörser. Mörser exists since 1995 when we started with 4 vocalists and only one guitar. Due to different reasons there were some line-up changes over the years and we have been together with the above described line-up now for two years.

As we’re talking about the band, which bands are important influences for Mörser?

Hm, definitely Depeche Mode. And also Bolt Thrower, Carcass and Oasis!

What kind of audience can one expect at a Mörser gig? (I mean, are you more of a grindcore band or are you aiming for the death metal audiences?)

Most of the times the audience is more hardcore. But not exclusively, there are also metal heads and Punks who can have a good time with us.

A couple of years ago you released ‘Scum’, an effort that came out as the soundtrack for a comic. How did you come up with that?

Ah, that is really a long time ago. Sascha, the comic author, asked us if we would like to do a soundtrack for his comic. He described his idea and showed us some material. And we thought, yes we’ll do it.

This comic, is it something for the German fans only or is it also available for people that speak English?

In fact it isn’t available anymore (for nobody). It is sold out. But because of the German language of the comic it was sold mostly in German speaking countries. That was the reason for us to re-release these songs together with the 5 new songs on Pure Scum.

Over to something else. Finally you’ve released your long awaited album, how do you feel?

We feel quite nice. But we recorded the songs a year ago and in the meantime we worked on new songs and these songs are now slightly more in the style of the songs on the first LP. Definitely again faster then the Pure songs. So the Pure songs are kind of old songs for us and the satisfaction we get by the release is the fact that we now can focus on the new songs and the third album which will hopefully be ready next year.

Unfortunately for you guys the album didn’t get released the way it was supposed to be, why not?

We did the recordings for Pure in September and October 2005, but then Sascha had some personally reasons to shift the release of the Comic/CD, kind of a burn out. In May we decided to release the songs without the comic. But we didn’t like the idea to release just a mini-CD. Therefore Dennis, who also did the Pure recordings, re-mastered the Scum songs and we put them together with the new songs on one CD. To keep the connection to the comic, Sascha did the artwork for the CD.

I’m not sure if you already read some reviews for ‘Pure Scum’ but if you did, how were they?

I already read some reviews and in my opinion they are good. It’s good to hear stuff like "the sound is brutal" or "vocals give the music an overall sick touch". Good that the reviewers are satisfied.

I’ve seen quite some artwork for Pure Scum, it seems like you guys like to wear suits, what’s up with that?

Nothing. We only had a commercial deal with a men dressing store in Bremen to earn more money. What’s wrong with that?

And how about the guy with the gasmask and the gun?

What do you mean? You want to know if he is all right? I don’t know. He just came to do the photos and immediately disappeared. We think he is back in the underground to fight against corruption and crime.

Ok, we’re a (couple of) year(s) later and you decide to record a new album, any chance you’ll release an effort that’s not supposed to be a soundtrack to a comic? Why (not)?

Yes, definitely. Because we already work on new songs for a third LP. We hopefully will record them in spring next year and release it in summer.

If you would get the chance to release a soundtrack to a movie, what kind of movie would you want it to be? Why?

I don’t know. I can tell you what kind of it won’t be. A lovely and cute bubblegum movie for example. This kind of movie is definitely too gaudy.

Please tell us about the future/touring plans of Mörser?

As I already said, we plan to release a new album somewhere between spring and summer next year. And we would like to do a tour, but we didn’t agree yet where to do it.

If you have anything left to say to the readers of Metalrage.com, please do it now!
