I’m quite sure that Opeth doesn’t need any introduction to all the heavy metal fans. The band has catapulted themselves to the front of the metal league and have been there since their Blackwater Park album which was released in 2001. The same Opeth have recently released a DVD which was recorded in the Royal Albert Hall when they did their 20th anniversary tour.

The first view onstage discouraged me a bit since it was taken in the back of the venue and left only a tiny spot in the screen for the stage. Luckily after Opeth came on it became clear that there are a variety of camera angles and all is shot with either pods or a steady hand. This means no wobbling images or flashy moves during the show, this is a big plus for me since in my opinion the music of Opeth is not suitable for that. Luckily the editor of the DVD had the same thoughts as me and he did a terrific job.

As for the show itself it was great. Starting with their entire Blackwater Park album, which in my opinion is still their greatest album, filled with alltime classics like ‘Hope Leaves’ and ‘The Lotus Eater’ they instantly stole my heart during the first time I watched it. The band is stealing the show with their intensity and tightness which we all know from Opeth. Combine this with the unique location and the great atmosphere that is present in the venue. During ‘The Leper Infinity’ the clean vocals gave me goosebumps and that would happen a lot more during the entire DVD.

I’m really excited to see that every effort has been taken to create an unique document that would live up to the expectations of the fans of this band. It even became a great document for the occasional metalhead that has been in contact with their music every now and then. As for the specials on the DVD. It contains an documentary of Opeth on the road which contains 45 minutes of backstage footage and a 40 minute interview with mastermind Mikael Åkerfeldt
