The first time I got to know Dissection was years ago, it was the time I started to listen to metal. Bands like Metallica and Megadeth. One day I went to the local music-store and there I found ‘Storm of the light’s bane’ “Damn, this music sucks bigtime” I thought. It was way too heavy for me at that moment. It was just a cacophony to me. 2 years later Dissection became one of my favourite bands ever.
‘Storm of the light’s bane’ and ‘The Somberlain’ are really awesome albums. But when Jon Nödtveidt went to jail, Dissection could not bring out new material for quite some years. After the release of Jon he found new bandmembers and recorded a new album called ‘Reinkaos’. Many fans didn’t like the musical change of Dissection. Personally I don’t like ‘Reinkaos’ as much as ‘Storm…’ and ‘Somberlain’ but it is okay. But ‘The Rebirth of Dissection’ is really awesome. It includes recordings of the gig on the 30th October of 2004 of their ‘Rebirth of Dissection European Tour 2004’. Mostly songs of their earlier albums were played and one new song of their latest album, ‘Maha Kali’. When I saw Dissection playing ‘Maha Kali’ live on this dvd I thought that ‘Maha Kali’ actually fits in the Dissection style, but after listening the song on the album again, it wasn’t that good anymore. Well that is a good thing, playing a less good song live, and then it does kick ass. The sound quality is very good, you can either choose for dolby 5.1 or DTS. The camera work is great as well. Different camera angles were used and show some nice close ups of the musicians and the public. About the musicians: These are not just regular musicians. Ex- Dark Funeral, Aborym and Nightrage members. It’s amazing how the artists managed to play these songs in such a short time so perfectly. But you can see clearly that Thomas Asklund is very concentrated behind his drumkit, it seems not natural. The complete duration of the gig is about 1 and a half our. Dissection also play ‘Elisabeth Bathory’, the Tormetor cover.
The dvd also has some extra’s like an interview with Jon. Personally I’m not a big fan of interviews on dvd’s. Usually I watch them once, and that has to be enough for the next 5 years or so. But I guess many of you like interviews, so you will enjoy this one with a duration of 25 minutes. Next to the Interview there is a photo gallery with some great pictures of the gig. I would have preferred just pictures, but Dissection chose for the slideshow. To complete the dvd Dissection also added the video of ‘Starless Aeon’ another song of Reinkaos.
This is a must have for Dissection fans. A great compilation of their best songs. Tracklist:
