Named after the wild and deformed slave in Shakespeare’s “The Tempest”, Caliban are five German musicians who, despite their young age, are already seen as veterans in the European metalcore scene. Their fifth album, “The Undying Darkness” is once again recorded by In Flames frontman Anders Friden and is provided with a cover design created by Mike D (Killswitch Engage). Even Kreator vocalist Mille Petrozza was invited to sing along on the album.

And it shows. Well, that goes for the production and the cover. The album contains the good, clear production I’m used to from the latest album ‘The Opposite From Within’. The cover however, well…it’s a nice one, but it sure isn’t the greatest design I’ve seen from Mike D. As for the song with Mille Petrozza, I wouldn’t say it’s a great addition to the album, really not that special to me. But let’s cut the crap and see what the music is like on this album!

Well, how shall I say it? I just can’t come up with anything else then: “quite alright”. This album really disappointed me. I expected so much more from these guys this time but unfortunately they seem to have lost their own unique sound I liked so much on their last album. Instead, Caliban sounds way too much like Killswitch Engage on this album in my opinion. A pity, because I know they can do better than this.

The clean vocals are a bit too much for me as well. Sometimes I hear choruses on this album (for example in ‘It’s Our Burden To Bleed’) that are a bit too melodic for some reason. They just don’t do to me what they did on ‘Opposite From The Within’.

To say that this album simply sucks wouldn’t be fair. Instead, the album still has a lot of good parts on it. Though, it disappointed me a little, hopefully the diehard Caliban-fans don’t feel the same like me ‘cause I know this band can do better.

I do not like the melodic parts but the rest is pretty good for a german band!

I also hear a lot of Killswitch and As I Lay Dying (Song About Killing/Nothing Is Forever) influences, they lost a bit of their own sound, but heck, it's a new Caliban cd ^^ Rock 'n Roll! The songs are good, Together Alone is my favorite, the most refreshing song of the album.
